ALCHEMY AS A METHODOLOGY

What does using alchemy as a methodology mean? This is a definition I am still working on. Here are some things I do know:

Alchemy is a way of creating that does not demand specialization, but rather requires flexibility of mind, curiosity, the ability to learn, and requires both logical and associative thought. In this way, alchemy is one of the most human of disciplines.

There is no imperative to have all the answers: unknown or still-becoming processes are inherent and expected.

An alchemical methodology means establishing lived understandings of materials and processes, especially those we typically abdicate to experts.

Transformation is the default state.

The process leans on the ability to translate reality into symbols, manipulate them, and then translate them out again, often yielding surprising results.

Working on something from a place of ignorance/innocence is not always comfortable or easy, but frequently yields innovation in thought and a strong sense of self.

Below are several expressions of my alchemical research: seawater batteries, crystal radios, and acoustic drone instruments.

SEAWATER BATTERIES

Experiments in generating current to ground radios. Using copper, zinc, and sea water. The colors shifted over time to create the variety seen here.

CRYSTAL RADIOS

Made of galena lead crystal, copper coil, and wires reaching to sky and ground. These radios receive signal despite their primitive appearance.

DRONE INSTRUMENTS

Based on the function of the hurdy-gurdy, instruments were constructed of a variety of materials. All that is required is a spinning wheel and a string under tension.
