Memory Organ 02: communication continues my series of pieces exploring compartmentalization and the packaging of self. Communicating our selves is one of the most difficult tasks in human connection. In our own lives, we package our memories for ourselves. In narrative art making, we package our memories for the viewer’s consumption. How does an artist’s own relationship with the past shift when put on display? To make information clear for the viewer, some aspects of memories must be pushed, pulled, emphasized, de-emphasized. What does this do to my own memory of events, actively crafting a more understandable narrative? In trying to simplify my story to be clear to the viewer, do I tokenize myself by stripping nuance? This woven mass of wires offers no answers, but meditates on meta-memory and self-commodification.
